I’m Carmen Miles, a senior academic leader specialising in educational change, learning and teaching quality assurance, and institutional transformation. Over more than two decades, I have led learning and teaching strategy at three major UK universities, including through taught and indefinite degree-awarding powers processes, building sustainable, high-quality provision for over 40,000 students globally.

This space shares my work, research, and reflections with colleagues across the higher education sector. My work focuses on how professional judgement in teaching and assessment is shaped, and sometimes constrained by institutional structures, technologies, and policy. Much of what I have learned has emerged through conversation and shared practice, working alongside educators as they navigate complexity and change. The resources here are offered in that spirit.

I am currently Strategic Lead for Digital Education at De Montfort University, where I co-lead the Education Enhancement Unit with university-wide responsibility for pedagogical innovation, academic development, and digital transformation. My approach grounds strategic vision in collaborative practice, supporting educators to translate theory into sustainable teaching practice that improves student learning.

I work at institutional, national, and international levels. I am Co-Chair of the TPACK Special Interest Group, leading a global research community; a member of D2L’s Instructional Design Advisory Board; and a co-lead of UCISA’s Digital Capabilities Survey. I have contributed to the House of Lords inquiry on blended learning, serve as Chief Examiner for Online Programmes at Sheffield Hallam University, and speak regularly at national and international conferences, including Times Higher Education summits, D2L Fusion, and SITE.
